The Space Station design of the late-1980s included a crew
habitation module with living and sleeping accommodation
for six-person crews. Central to this was a wardroom that
would offer a communal focal point on the Station where the
whole crew could gather at least once a day around a table
as a social or working event. This design for a table replaces
a conventional table with eight independently articulated
The table can be used for meals, meetings, entertainment
and other activities. It incorporates task lighting and storage compartments for notepads, checklists and cutlery. As a
wardroom table would be used intermittently, it should be as
compact as possible. This design is partly Inspired by the
fold-away tray tables on commercial aircraft. The outer four
work surfaces close and rotate completely beneath the table
while the extension flaps on the inner four work surfaces
rotate to stow inside the work surface bodies.
